Practical Production Supporting account: Music Video

Our next project in Media which was the practical production consisted of making all type of material which built up to our final production. This part of the production is marked out of a total of 60 marks, divided across three assessment criteria. These three are about, ‘AO1: Knowledge and Understanding’, ‘AO2: Analysis and Interpretation’ and ‘AO3: Production skills’. Altogether in this commentary about our project I am going to tell you about how conditions of production affect media texts, using appropriate use of technical terms and media language. I will explain in-depth analysis of our music video and the genre as a whole, forms and conventions, representation issues, relationship and appropriateness for the target audience; and what I learned about the production process.

When we started our project planning, we came up with loads of ideas and thought of questions which would sum up our project as a whole. The first question that we came up with was, ‘What is a music video?’, We summed up the music video to be a production which was made up of all conventions that make up the scene. We came up with other ideas that a music video contains all sorts of different angles and use shots like close ups and medium shots. Genre was a big fraction that consisted of making the music video, as this had to link to the video. For example, you couldn’t have an RnB song, and have a video of people playing drums and playing an electric guitar, as you may see in many rock videos. So we had to choose a song which had an easy genre which could relate to our everyday lives, and a genre which we enjoyed working with. Research which we did before we chose our song, consisted of watching a lot of music videos and comparing video to see how artists would respond to their song and types of moods they are trying to show. At first we was going to perform to the video ‘Apologize- by One Republic’, but in the video, the artists are not very active and don’t use a lot effects and don’t use many shot angles. As we kept searching we found a perfect choice for our group, which was ‘Outkast- Hey Yah’, this video was perfect for us, as they use a lot of shot angles and effects which I personally was eager to learn and I had many other ideas which I could relate to the video. Out of all the ideas our group had running through our heads one, shot I wanted to perform was the splitting the screen into three sections for the beginning part of the song. This is what we came up with:

We split the music video into sub sections, and one of these sections asked, ‘Who is your target audience and how could you tell?’, our group on knew this question from our research of the song and came up with the conclusion that the audience were teenagers aged from 12-18. We knew this from our research that an older generation would find the video with all the effects and shot angles to be very appealing, and the song hey yah is very fast. Our next sub section was how different social groups were represented during the making; this will cover gender, ethnicity, class and sexuality. Firstly the mise en scene was everything that made up the video and we found that most of the lyrics and effects that were being used would play a part on social groups. For e.g. ‘My baby can’t stand to see me walk out the door’, this could offend people who are more upper classed, as they would think that this song is portraying an image that relationships don’t last as this could be a common thing, which may be different for other individuals. And lastly the last sub section is ‘Is there any use of parody or pastiche’; this is how people behave in the videos, and their attitudes.  We tried to portray out video to be happy and joyful.

Using the choma key shows how we could use green screen and remove all the green to create an effect where we could place an object over another piece of footage.

In this part of our video we used the reverse effect, where we filmed a piece of footage of me falling back onto the ground, and putting it into reverse to show an illusion which people would think is imposible.

Our planning of our final video was helped by the planning of making storyboards.

Using layers on final cut pro, can show different effects like a fade.
In this timeline we have used a screen split into 3 parts to start the video.
